We Drink, But Only From The Left Side Of The Glass
Well, if it isn't that time of the month again.
The November Drinking Liberally meeting is Tuesday night the 14th at EGL, formerly Gideon's Nightery, at 23 Eagle St in North Adams. This'll be the first time there, since it's just opened up as EGL about three weeks ago. So it'll be a new experience for all of us. Ah, change. Something conservatives hate, right? At least in the classical definition of the word "conservative", anyway.
It's been an interesting month in the Northern Berkshire political scene since the last meeting, hasn't it? If this meeting is anything like that last one, there'll be a whole room full of interesting folks who like to talk politics. And there's a lot to talk about:
- What's Deval Patrick going to do, who's he going to do it with, and are any Northern Berkshire Democrats going to be there?
- Impeachment--still just a fantasy with Pelosi and Murtha in charge?
- The Mass. Congressional delegation--suddenly VERY powerful! What can we expect from them given the new majority?
- Giuliani, Romney, Pataki, McCain, or Huckabee vs. Gore, Clinton, Obama, or Kerry in '08?
- Berkshire Republicans--can they even challenge Ben Downing for his seat in 2 years?
- The Thing With The City Council Impeachment Resolution--has it changed anything? Should it?

What time do the festivities begin? and how long does it last? I have City Council tonight at 7:30 but it appears to be a relatively short agenda- chbpod
at best berkshire gop finds sacrificial lamb to confirm downing's status in the seat.
only northern berkshire dem with a shot at a serious appointment: dan bosley. my thought, why would you leave a committee chairmanship where you can do some genuine legislating with a like-minded governor? i think deval is what bos has been waiting for as a legislator, not as an out.
C: It starts at 7, but the last 2 meetings have gone about 3 hours, depending on who shows up. It's really not a "meeting", per se; there are no speakers or agenda, just good old fashioned anarchy. With liquor.
W: I don't know Dan Bosley well enough to determine his motivations, so you really could be 105% correct on that. But a few things have been pointed out to me:
1) An 8-year executive gig comes at a very good point in his career. Once he's done, he can retire from government and serve on boards, lobby, and advise as long as he feels like it. He'd have high level legislative AND executive experience.
2) It would probably pay a lot more than his House gig, even with the chairmanship.
3) He's attractive as a Berkshire-based appointee to cement Deval's relationship w/Western MA, and if he really pitched it hard, considering all the work Dan's put in for him, how could he say no?
Plus, imagine the fun we'd have during a special election to replace his seat in the House. Who'd be a good candidate for that?
Clarification: when I say "if he really pitched it hard", I mean if the new Governor pitched a position to Mr. Bosley, not the other way around...
I'd love to see the Boz in the Patrick administration--after all Boz' favorite movie is Zulu---and on a junket to South Africa he actually met with the Zulu Chief----on the more serious side----I think the Boz enjoys the legistative side of things more than the administrative---could be wrong we have not talked about it--and there's a certain amount of "administrative" duties to being a Committee chair----actually the Boz man could do more for the district as a legislator than as an administrator---and his time is more flexible-----did you know that Dan;s apartment on Beacon Hill (if he still has the same apartment) was occupied by John Olver---Dan picked it up when Olver won his seat in Congress----my wife and I stayed a few times at Chez Bosley on weekend visits to the Hub--some years ago--it was awful-- BUT very very cost effective---chbpod
Oh yeah- the Boz man did have a six year gig as a kegislator-- opps my bad- he was that as a student--- 6 years as a Legislator while Dukakis was Governor--- and Mike didn't do too badly for this district---not sure about the Drinking Liberally "meeting" a "roomful" of lefties----many(most) of whom hate my guts?????
I'll have to think about it--- but I can light up a room-----chbpod
IT's now six PM and my Council meeting is at 7:30--- if you can get back--before I leave @ 7:15-- I'd appreciate it----my problem is being personna non grata- not that I don;t enjoy that appellation--but I might- be a wet blanket on your party---so here is a list of people that might be there- that I don;t think would welcome my presence----is it likely that any of them will be at Drinking Liberally??
Eric Buddington
Kelly Lee
Nicolai Rudd
Eric Rudd
Peter May (and or spouse)
Wes Flinn
get back if you have the chance--as I say _ I might not drop by anyway---- but I don;t want to spoil the festivities---and bring out all that lefty hate-- chbpod
cjtrem- I agree that he'd run---but he barely got re-elected in Adams for Selectman---and he's not the people's choice in NA- Billsvills and especially Clarksburg---oh I think he'd run ---but elected??? never-----only NA possibility would be Gailanne Cariddi---if you are looking at incumbent politicos---not sure that she would take the shot---remember that I ran for State Rep back in 1984----got beat by first term incumbent Frank Costa in the primary------the Boz man got elected in 1986-------My better guess for a shot at the title State Representative would be Marge Ware---not a Senator-- but also not a bad consolation prize----although as has been pointed out on these various local Bloga----she has a shot at the administration in Elder Affairs-----and we have no idea if the Bozman
has anything waiting for him in the administration-----could be that Patrick wants the Bozman right where he is--considering that number of legislators that backed Reilly instead of Patrick-- could be that Danny could move up the food chain in leadership---but why pay attention to anything that I say-- I don;t know squat about politics-- chbpod
C: it's a good bet that at least one of those folks will be there, so unless you'd enjoy the prospect of feeling like W.T. Sherman walking into a Braves game at Turner Field, maybe tomorrow would be a better night to check out the new doin's down on Eagle St...
Willian Tecumseh Sherman is one of my heroes----if I don't show up-- it will not be because I feel intimidated--maybe I'll just stroll in -- get a couple of "gasps" and then leave----
I can really light up a room---chbpod
well obviously I didn't attend the soiree---better judgment??? no I was intimidated-- by my wife---maybe some other time-- BUT Open Forum went very well at Council-- you should schedule your Drinking Liberally sessions on either the second or fourth Tuesday of the month-- if not both--- chbpod
Eh, I have no personal beef with Councilor Billings. Just didn't care for his comments on my blog, that's all. Clark, feel free to stop by anytime. Really. It's a fun bunch.
We just popped in for a couple seconds tonight - we have a doggie under the weather and I also had to prepare some stuff for classes tomorrow. Maybe in December we can stay longer.

Oh, and true story:
I don't know if you've ever been on I-85 in the Atlanta area, but it's pretty insane. A fraternity brother of mine (originally from NJ) was on his way down to visit his sister in FL. It's five lanes of non-stop 80 mph traffic, but who gets pulled over? The guy with the NJ plates, of course.
Anyhoo, the stereotypical Southern sheriff (mirrored sunglasses, gut out to here, Jackie-Gleason-in-Smokey and the Bandit type) gets out and the following takes place:
Sheriff: Boy, you know how fast you was goin'?
Charlie (frat bro): Sir, I know I was speeding, but so was everyone else. I've been in the right lane for 20 miles.
S: I saw you dartin' in and out so you could go faster!
C: Sir, with all due respect, I'll admit to speeding, but I've been in the same lane for a long time.
S: Boy, I ain't never seen no one go through Georgia as fast as you!
C: (without missing a beat) Sherman did.
Charlie spent the night in jail.

Wes-- as in -"You in a heap of trouble boy"----yeah we'll catch up at some time---I loved the old Dodge Sheriff commercials---when I got married( first wife) in 1965---I was thankfully warned by the only loyal member of my groomsmen (as i think the proper terminology is today) that the others were going to spray paint my U- Haul trailer-- which I was leaving with from Massachusttes for Florida State---"NAACP Express" on one side and "Integrate of Bust" on the other---fortunately I was able to hide the car and trailer---I'm still here---chbpod
